Photonic Networks and Sensors Group (PhoNetS)

 

The Research Activity of the Photonic Networks and Sensors Group is involved in studies of important optical communications areas such as: network architectures, broadband access systems, high-speed multi-wavelength (WDM) optical fiber transmission, dynamic switching & routing and advanced optic devices design. In this last subject are included: fiber optical filters, liquid crystal wavelength division multiplex filters, WDM Holographic devices and Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) and receivers for phase-modulated optical communication systems.

8. MODULATION FORMATS ANALYSIS AND RECEIVER DESIGN (References 8 )

  • Advanced optical modulation format polarization-division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) has become a key ingredient in the design of 100 and 200-Gb/s dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) networks. The performance of this format varies according to the shape of the pulses employed by the optical carrier.
  • Optical Signal Impairment Study of Cascaded Optical Filters in DQPSK and PM-DQPSK Systems
  • Design of a low-cost alternative scheme of direct-detection to detect a100 Gbps polarization multiplexed differential quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-DQPSK) signal. The proposed scheme is based on a delay line and a polarization rotator.

9. HOW TO TEACH OPTICS AND PHOTONICS FOR THE FUTURE (References 9 )

  • The teaching of optics and photonics, critical fields at the core of today's world-wide technological infrastructure, must continually be upgraded and renewed in order to meet the growing demands of research, science and industry.
